LOS ANGELES (AP) — Underneath his umbrella, NFL legend Dan Marino stood nearly drenched on the sideline watching Prince’s epic “Purple Rain” Super Bowl halftime performance in 2007 during a torrential Miami downpour. “The halftime performance has come a long way,” said the Hall of Fame quarterback who played 17 seasons with the Miami Dolphins and competed in the 1985 Super Bowl. His show will be vastly different than the NFL’s first Super Bowl halftime show in 1967, which featured marching bands from the University of Arizona and Grambling State University, a historically Black college, along with hundreds of flying pigeons, thousands of balloons and two soaring men wearing jetpacks. After the inaugural Super Bowl, the NFL kept bringing back other marching bands, drill teams, signed Chubby Checker and Up with People, an organization that stage positive thinking through dance and song performances. Dudowsky recalled when Coldplay frontman Chris Martin said the “Super Bowl of music is the Super Bowl.” He said the halftime show has been able to grow thanks to the NFL's ability to adjust to the current culture and giving deserving artists the platform to express their artistry.

Vice President Kamala Harris recalled a testy exchange she had with Mike Pompeo back in 2017. During Pompeo's confirmation hearing, she asked him if he believed in climate change. Harris was speaking about the Biden administration's climate policies at the Aspen Ideas conference in Miami. Speaking about her time in the Senate, Harris recalled the "heat" she took after an exchange she had with a Trump appointee about climate change during a confirmation hearing. Harris, who was then fresh off her election to represent California, asked Pompeo whether he believed in climate change.

Singer Gloria Estefan, in a new episode of the HBO Max and CNN series, “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?”, opened up to Wallace about being reluctant to let her daughter, Emily, come out to her grandmother before she died. “I told her just do it slowly,” she told Wallace. People see, but they don’t want to talk about it, they don’t want to see it,” Estefan said. “And we wanted to share those things with people, so they would realize these are conversations we need to have. The response.”Estefan went on to applaud her daughter, who is also a singer, praising her strong will.

Miami Beach, Fla. The Miami area has always been known to push boundaries. It serves as a financial gateway to the Americas and dared to put the Key lime into a pie. It arguably invented the hurricane party and had no small role in America’s 1980s cocaine habit. Which makes the risk-averse nature of 2022’s Art Basel Miami Beach especially surprising.
The Cuban restaurant Versailles has been a fixture in Miami's Little Havana neighborhood for the last 50 years. Courtesy VersaillesIt's also drawn celebrities, including Beyoncé and Jay-Z, and has been a destination for international tourists looking to eat a Cuban meal or just hang out outside la ventanita, sipping a Cuban coffee, nibbling a guava pastry and absorbing the surrounding culture. Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain drinks a Cuban coffee with Felipe Valls Sr. during a campaign visit to Versailles in 2011. “This is kind of their ground zero, the epicenter of the Cuban American community. On its website, Versailles calls itself “the world’s most famous Cuban restaurant.”
Latinos are underrepresented in the media industry workforce across film, radio, television, newspapers and digital platforms, according to the report. Latinos are 19% of the nation's population, almost 1 in 5 Americans, and 18% of workers outside the media industry. The largest percentage of Hispanic media industry workers were employed in service worker positions (19%) — which include food, cleaning and personal and protective services, according to the latest available reports submitted by media companies to the U.S. In positions that can influence the content audiences consume, Latinos were far less represented: They made up only 7% of professional media industry positions such as actors, producers, directors, writers, reporters and editors. When Latinos did see themselves represented in content, they felt "it was inaccurate" in most cases, de Armas said.
Legendary music producer Emilio Estefan weighed in with his take on how to boost Latino representation in showbiz. The Cuban-American Estefan, who is married to superstar singer Gloria Estefan, has endured one of the relatively few key figures in American show business. He's won 19 Grammys, and President Barack Obama awarded both Gloria and Emilio Estefan the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015. In 2022, only 3.1% of lead actors in TV shows are Latinos, and the percentage of representation in films is no better. The report also found that not only is there a lack of Latino representation but many of the portrayals of Latino are negative.
